My Pop Studio In Action: Camp Nockamixon

Camp Nockamixon is a traditional overnight summer camp in a technology-limited setting.  My Pop Studio learning goals were modified into camp games, and Media Education Lab staff showcased the website on one computer.  Read the attached case study for more details, including explanations of the media literacy camp games.

  • Setting:  Overnight summer camp
  • Time Frame:  one day, 3 one-hour sessions with different age groups of girls
  • Computer Access:   None.  Lab staff brought  their own computer, speakers, and projector

Three separate groups of 20-30 girls, divided by age range, experienced a one-hour My Pop Studio workshop.  The workshop was led by three staff of the Media Education Lab:  Sherri Hope Culver, Mike Robb Greico, and Kelly Mendoza.

Because of the low access to technology, the team adapted the learning goals of My Pop Studio into technology-free, fun games suitable for a camp environment.  For instance, one game called Shake it Baby! connected to My Pop Studio's learning goals of understanding music genre and how music makes us feel different ways.  To learn more about Shake it Baby! and other media literacy games suitable for camp, click here.

Although Camp Nockamixon does not have a computer lab, the team brought in a wireless laptop, projection screen, and speakers so girls could see My Pop Studio.  A few girls were brought up in front of the group to play a game.

Although My Pop Studio is an online game for media literacy, the learning goals can be modified into technology-free games and activities suitable for settings with no computers, such as summer camp.  You can learn more details in the case study about this experience to see exactly how My Pop Studio was incorporated into Camp Nockamixon.
