Graduate Education

Renee Hobbs is currently accepting MA and PhD students for those who are admitted into any graduate program at the University of Rhode Island. Hobbs offers grad courses in the theory and practice of media literacy education, libraries, young adult services and new literacies, and children, adolescents and mass media. Independent study coursework and (paid and unpaid) research opportunities are also available for graduate students as part of the ongoing research and community service projects of the Media Education Lab. Julie Coiro is currently accepting PhD students for those accepted into the URI School of Education and the PhD program in English, with specialization in Writing and Rhetoric. Because of our interdisciplinary focus, you can choose from a number of possible "homes" for your graduate work, based on your specific interests: 

Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy. A 12-credit blended program that can be completed as a postgraduate program or layered onto an existing graduate program. 
Education MAT (deadline Feb 1)
MA program in Education (deadline Feb 1). Students can customize the program to focus on Digital Media Literacy by completing the Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy and taking additional coursework aligned with your interests. 

Research Assistant. Work with the Media Education Lab on a collaborative project at the University of Wuerzburg, Wuerzburg, Germany under the supervision of Professor Dr. Silke Grafe and in collaboration with Dr. Renee Hobbs to advance research in media literacy teacher education. Full-time or half-time. Salary dependent on experience. One-year commitment. Location: Wuerzburg, Germany.  Completed MA in Education or Media Studies, Higher Education, Media Psychology, or related field.
