Jiwon Yoon

Dr. Jiwon Yoon (Ph.D., Temple University) is a researcher, educator, and activist with 20 years of experience teaching media literacy in various educational settings, including public/private schools, alternative educational settings, universities, and teacher education programs in the U.S., South Korea, and China. She was an associate professor of media studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago (2010-2017, tenured) and at Northwest University in Kirkland, WA (2017-2019).

Jiwon has been focusing on research in media literacy in the areas of global understanding, intercultural communication, popular culture in North and South Korea, and Pan-Asian identity. Her works have been published in scholarly journals and as book chapters, and she has received research awards from BEA (Broadcast Education Association) and ICA (International Communication Association). Jiwon also worked with South Korean media literacy scholars and educators to develop educational resources that implement media literacy education for multicultural education. She is currently working on her book examining North Korean defectors’ mediated experiences in North and South Korea, exploring how media literacy education promotes cultural competence during their acculturation process.

Jiwon was a member of Media Education Lab during her doctoral studies at Temple University (2005-2009) and participated in various projects, including but not limited to: (developed the content and format of online multimedia curriculum for girls); Media Literacy as a Means to Promote Cultural Understanding project (worked as a consultant to promote better understanding of Muslim culture through media literacy); and Digital Nation (as part of a team, developed a structured online learning experience for educators and parents using video and multimedia resources created for the television documentary entitled Digital Nation). Jiwon is thrilled to rejoin Media Education Lab!
