About Us

The mission of the Media Education Lab is to improve digital and media literacy education

through scholarship and community service.

Founded and directed by Renee Hobbs, THE MEDIA EDUCATION LAB haS two primary goals:

(1) Providing public programs, educational services, community outreach and multimedia curriculum resources targeted to the needs of educators and learners in school and after-school settings; and

(2) Developing and implementing a multidisciplinary research agenda to explore the educational impact of media and technology, with a focus on digital and media literacy education as an expanded conceptualization of literacy.

We also address policy issues that affect the quality of teaching and learning about media, technology, and popular culture. Learn more about how our values shape our instructional philosophy.

The Media Education Lab is one of a small handful of research university programs that focuses specifically on the intersections of media studies, communication and education. Graduate and undergraduate students are able to take advantage of the ongoing research programs and are active participants in all of the programs of the Media Education Lab.
